Writer's Life

Darlene's journal entry:

The Writer's Life is so blissful!  Usually after sleeping late, I stroll around my immense manicured gardens sipping gourmet coffee and thinking, "Whatever shall I do today?"

Being the master of my own life can be a challenge, but thank goodness before long my Swedish masseur, Sven, arrives to gently massage my cares away.  Then, it's back upstairs for a long soak in the jacuzzi, followed by luncheon with my adoring friends, and perhaps a little shopping (or perhaps a lot!), then a manicure, a pedicure, and a facial.  Afternoon brings the inevitable bon-bons and a nice nap on the couch.

My evenings are equally full.  Someone, somewhere, is always throwing a huge gala in my honor.  Or some handsome man or other is whisking me off for dinner and dancing. ::sigh::  But somebody's got to endure this torment, or where would these wonderful books come from?

(And if you bought that, there's more fiction and fantasy available back on my home page!)

 Darlene's real journal entry:

Good heavens!  Is it Wednesday already?  I'm 50 pages behind, my editor is waiting on a new proposal, and now these movie producers want a 10-page treatment of IT HAPPENED IN TEXAS.

And ... Eeeek!  I've got to prepare a half-way coherent lecture for that class on suspense tomorrow night.

But before I go into my office, I'd better dig out some sweats -- why is the to-be-washed pile always so huge???-- and get my poor neglected body to the gym.  If I don't get some exercise soon, my hind end will be the size of Texas and my joints'll freeze up.

Oh no.  Is that the Fed Ex truck I hear?  More work.  Galleys to proof read, most likely.  I hope the poor man doesn't trip in one of the kazillion holes that gopher's been digging in my hopeless front yard.  Must call exterminator to-day.

Oh Lord.  Please just get me through one more week.

Okay.  Okay.  Here's the real truth:

The writer's life is actually a blast.  The work is hard at times, but the rewards are well worth it.  The greatest rewards are the relationships -- working with my wonderful agent and my talented editors, meeting my readers, sharing lifelong friendships with other writers.  Click the Writer's Life button from time to time.  I'll share some pictures like these ...
